Types of wax and the benefits
Firstly, how many types of wax do you think there is?
- Paraffin wax
- Soy wax
- Candle gel wax
- Beeswax
- Palm wax
So, we now know there are 5 types of wax, we all have out preferred wax but what are the real benefits to all the different waxes.
Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax is one of the most versatile and common waxes used today andit comes in different melt points. Most of the commercially available candles you buy in stores today are made with paraffin. However,Paraffin wax is a by-product of the crude oil refinement process so is usually avoided due to the environmental and detrimental effect it has. A paraffin wax treatment has many aesthetic benefits and can also provide relief for people with conditions like arthritis and fibromyalgia. Paraffin wax at current state has more uses in the cosmetic industry.
Soy Wax
Soy wax is a relatively new wax to the scene, and it has been making big impressions. With the demand for natural candles growing, soya wax has become the go to wax due to its natural properties and its eco-friendly.Many soy waxes are made from 100% soybean oil. Others are blended with a variety of vegetable waxes (like palm and beeswax)oils (like coconut).
Candle Gel Wax
Candle gel wax as stated in the name it is a gel and not a wax. It is a combination of resin and mineral oil although it is still remarkably like other waxes in that it holds scent and colour and melts and burns. The only difference is in the transparency. Gel wax is often used to make imitation candles of liquids. Gel wax is probably one of the more fun waxes to work with.
Beeswax
Beeswax is one of the oldest candles making wax materials and many would argue that it is also the best wax for candles. Beeswax is a by-product of honey and is 100% natural. Given the nature of beeswax it is a never-ending supply if bees exist,we will have beeswax. Beeswax has a natural sweetness to it due to the honey. It is a great wax and good for the environment.
Palm wax
Palm wax is like soy wax in that it is made from a natural oil. Palm oil is the main ingredient in Palm wax. Palm wax is a very firm so is great to use for pillar candles. Palm wax is often blended with soy wax to make it harder. Due to it being made of Palm oil it is great for the environment and all natural. However it has a much higher melting point than soy wax.
